McWilliam’s Excellence in Action Award 2025

I’m honoured (and still a little surprised) to share that I’ve been awarded the McWilliam’s Excellence in Action Award at this year’s Australian Wine Industry Awards.

This recognition means a great deal — not just personally and my work at Vinya Vella, but as a reflection of the work I’ve had the chance to do locally and internationally. As a consultant, vineyard owner, and now winemaker to spread the word and knowledge about old vines.

A huge thanks to the award organisers, sponsors, and judges, and especially to the many colleagues, mentors and clients — some I’ve known for years, others I’ve only admired from afar — who’ve challenged and supported me along the way.

A particularly meaningful moment was seeing two of my mentors in the audience that night — Dr Peter Dry OAM and Di Davidson. True titans of Australian viticulture, they’ve shaped not just my thinking, but that of many across the industry. I’m proud to have learned from them and worked alongside them.

To my family — thank you. Your patience, belief, and encouragement are the foundation for everything I do. Sharing this moment with Natasha made it all the more special.

Congratulations also to Andrew Caillard MW, recipient of the Maurice O’Shea Award. A contributor to the Australian wine industry for over 45 years and historian and author of the Australian Ark an impressive publication on Australia's wine history to date..

There’s a lot still to do — and this award is encouragement to keep at it, with purpose and integrity.

A few photos from the night below — moments I’ll never forget.

Cheers,
Dylan
